Always a Cat

I was watching one of my all time favorite movies, “Birdy.” There’s a scene where Birdy’s pet canary, Perta, flutters, floats and flies in slow motion. Diego-San raced to the TV screen when he saw Perta. He hasn’t moved that fast in many many months.

Baldy and Pee Boy

For 18 years Diego-san’s special time with me was right before bedtime when I would comb him. He loved being combed. He wouldn’t let me go to bed until we did the routine. With his health issues the past month, he hasn’t wanted to be combed. And because I haven’t been able to comb him, he’s developed mats So I tried to undo them by using my fingers, this led to clumps of fur being removed.

So now Diego-San has some bald spots on his chest, the most prominent being right under his neck where there used to be a proud tuft of fur.

During the last few months of his life, Thompson started having trouble using the litter box. I moved one into one of the unused bedrooms on the main level of the house. This meant he didn’t have to go downstairs to get to the litter box. But in the last months, he didn’t always use the box, and the carpet in the bedroom got stained.

A few weeks after Thompson was gone, I noticed a new spot on the carpet. Thompson hadn’t been the only culprit. Ever since then Theo hasn’t always chosen to use a little box to pee. I’ve taken him to the vet multiple times to see if there is something physically causing the issue. Nothing has been found yet. It’s almost like once he saw Thompson not using the litter box he decided litter boxes in our house are optional.

You may have seen some of the pictures in the upstairs main bedroom where I have puppy pads laid out on areas of the carpet where Theo has peed. This week I discovered he’s been peeing on some rugs in my office (which I haven’t been using other than throwing empty boxes in it). A couple of days ago I moved a litter box in the main level bathroom. Thankfully he’s been using it and I haven’t found any non litter box pee spots. (I was sure to give him a treat the first few times he used the moved litter box.)

So this week I’ve given both Diego-San and Theo new nicknames: Baldy and Pee Boy. I don’t think they particularly like their new names. All of us can confirm it sucks to get old.

Living Standards

Diego-San doesn’t want to hear any old stories about a predecessor, Mr. Max, having to live in the house all those years without any air conditioning. Diego-San has let me know he wouldn’t have moved in with me in an air conditioner-less house. He has his standards.

Love the Shoe

Starz

Diego-San listened into a conference I presented at. He eventually had to make an appearance too and the moderator recognized him. What the audience didn’t get to see was Theo hacking up a massive hair ball in the middle of my presentation.

Good Weekend

Diego-San had a pretty good weekend. He ate all his meals and yesterday he ate a ton of food, more than he’s eaten for a long long time. Hopefully this will continue for a while.

Give Me a W

Theo wanted me to take the picture from behind him so his leg and arms would be forming a “W” for weekend instead of a “M” for meekend. Good help is hard to find.

Diego-San and I appreciate all the kind words and thoughts. We definitely will look into all the suggestions to help him avoid future visits to the vet... He still is acting subdued from yesterday’s events but he seems to be moving better and he ate a little bit today...

Health Report

It’s been a rough couple of months for Diego-San health wise. He has good days and he has bad days. Days when he doesn’t eat anything and is lethargic and other days when he’s super amorous and attention seeking.

Last week he had a few bad days in a row so I called to make an appointment at the vet. The soonest they could get him in was yesterday. He perked up a little over the weekend but I kept the appointment. Turned out he was really constipated again and his anal glands (a lifelong problem) needed to be expressed (the vet said they were the size of grapes- she had never seen anal glands so swollen. So I left him at the vet and they expressed the glands and gave him an enema. I’m going to have to do a better job at monitoring his ‘output’ to see when he’s getting constipated...Diego-San avoided me the rest of the day... I don’t blame him.

P.S. I was a little surprise at Theo. He didn’t seem at all concerned about Diego-san’s absence during the day. Usually when I drag one of the boyz off in the dreaded carrier the other(s) gather and seemed alarmed to be minus one. And when all are back home everyone in the house traditionally gets a treat to reward all the trauma. Theo didn’t seem to even notice Diego-San was gone. And upon our return he smelled his brother but then went about his routine.

The Office

I’m back to working from home after working the past two weeks at the office. We’ll see how the boyz adapt. We had a Zoom office social last week and I got to see some of my co-workers non human roommates (all of them dogs). Unfortunately since I was at the office the boyz didn’t get to join in.

Theo fought valiantly but ended up losing his battle with his favorite scratching mat.

Theo did a face plant playing with one of his toys. Diego-San checked to make sure I got it on camera. I did not. Diego-San is disappointed.
