Party Boy

Thompson decided he was really going to whoop it up on New Year's Eve.

Perhaps Not A Romantic

Theo didn't get misty eyed at the end of 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir' like I did.  I think he was too busy trying to figure out what Diego-san was up to upstairs.

Shirking Duties

Our garage got broken into and my snowblower was stolen.  I lectured the boyz for not alerting me that somebody was breaking into the garage.  I'm sure if we had a dog there would have been some yapping. The boyz seemed to take the criticism in stride...

Diego-san can't put his paw on it but something is telling him he's about to be annoyed in about ten seconds.

Holiday Greetings

"So bang the drum slowly and play the fife lowly..."

2012 was the year that had no silence. Thankfully music played a part of that. I saw a lot of great artists including Nick Lowe, John Prine, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Madonna, Graham Parker, Wilco, Mark Knopfler, and Bob Dylan (Rochester, St. Paul, and Chicago) but perhaps the show I'll always associate this year with was Suzanne Vega's dinner show at the Dakota Jazz Club. She played a short set but as a learning guitar player I appreciated how her acoustic based songs proved that all you need to be an effective artist really is a guitar and an honest voice.

It was a few days after the show when I read about the death of Jenny Engh. Jenny was one of the three people I've come across in my life that I considered a mentor. Her death from breast cancer shook me up not only because she died far too young but because she always struck me as one of the most alive in the moment, energetic people I knew. Jenny had this incredibly rare ability to make whoever she was with feel like they were the most important person in the room, something not only I felt, but something her eulogizer shared to many nodding heads of agreement at her service.

The eulogizer also mentioned that growing up Jenny used to love to sing for her family and one of her favorite songs to perform was "The Streets of Laredo." I decided I was going to learn to play the song on my guitar. I searched for a good version to learn from and discovered that a couple of years ago Suzanne Vega recorded a version for a project to support finding a cure for breast cancer. The timing of discovering her recording and its purpose seemed a little cosmic and of all the songs I’ve learned, I notice I sing “The Streets of Laredo” with just a little bit more heart than any of the others.

I think of all the people one comes across in life there are just a handful that make you want to be a better person. For me, Jenny was one of those few. My fondest memory of her was when I worked for her at the Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development. I was sitting at the receptionist desk when she came tearing around the corner coming back from a legislative hearing. She saw me, stopped in her tracks and said, "I just learned the meaning of life. It's to always keep learning." And with that she scampered off to her office. I thought about following her and asking her to elaborate but didn't. We kept in touch some over the years but I never did get around to asking her what prompted her to share the life lesson with me that day. I never forgot those words and the older I get the more I see she was so right. Life is about trying to learn more because that's just about the only way to continue to grow and strive to be a better person. I admittedly didn't always do my best at that in 2012.

When I developed a ringing in my ear a couple of years ago and went to visit my doctor for some relief the first thing he said to me was, "There are support groups for that." He wasn't kidding. It's been a couple of years of visiting every doctor and every specialist I could trying everything to get some peace. The last treatment western medicine had to offer was steroid shots to my eardrum. The shots didn't alleviate the buzzing any and left me feeling like I'll never know what a moment of silence sounds like for the rest of my life. Worse the hole from the injections never healed so this past June I had surgery to repair the perforated eardrum. Bad news: ringing remains. Good news: didn’t lose my sense of taste or control of my facial muscles- the two risks of the surgery.

A hearing aid has helped some but it makes the sounds of the world sound like they are coming through a cheap transistor radio. It reminds me growing up trying to listen to my AM only radio stations muffled through a pillow trying to hide my staying up far too late for the sake of music, from Mom. Some simple sounds (turn signals and footsteps) are amplified to a silly extreme. Modified voices and every day sounds are bad enough but to have to try to enjoy music this way knocks the wind out of me. Move over Beethoven (although I certainly have a deeper understanding of what it means to ring in a new year).

One thing about the past year is I have become more grateful than ever for what great teachers I am living with. Theo is endlessly entertaining and keeps reminding me what life might be like living with a puppy. His constant adventure seeking, playfulness, and need for attention keeps the house full of energy. If he can't have my attention he tries to interest one of his brothers who don't always take kindly to his relentless restlessness and his spaciness. But he is such a sweet boy and every day seems like it’s all brand new to him.

Diego-san agrees that this year is better left behind. The year started with his butt getting infected from being bitten by one of his brothers (Thompson and I strongly suspect who it might have been). Later he had issues with his anal glands not expressing properly (oh the indignity). This meant he got signed up for the veterinarian’s “with every five anal gland expression visits the sixth visit is free” program. Recovery from the butt biting incident meant a few days isolation and all of my attention both which Diego-san seemed to really appreciate and he became even more snuggly than he had been and he always has been my snuggliest boy.

Thompson is great at helping me keep things in perspective. I may have some ear and balance problems but he's a three-legged cat for pete's sake. The thing with losing a leg and being a cat is that it is really hard to be what you were supposed to be when you can't move around nimbly and quickly. Life is hard enough but when you've lost the ability to be what you were born to be, that's quite the burden. Sometimes when he tries to keep up with his brothers he has to use the side of his face as a fourth leg and that doesn't work so well. Playing with a catnip toy is a herky jerky struggle as he can't really bat it around without having to hop up and down all the while trying not to fall over. Still, despite being understandably tentative, Thompson is such a soulful boy. When he comes to sit on my lap I know it's because he really has found comfort and safety in his home and loves the occasional undivided attention from me. I can come home from a stressful day at work and all it takes is to see Thompson's trusting face and all the stress melts away. His purring and snoring are two of the sweetest sounds I'll ever hear.

Expediating a Visit

Bringing in the Troops

Diego-san said if I won't listen to his plea for a treat or an extra meal or two he has a new army behind him that will backup his demand.  I should be scared, I should be very scared.

How To Get Your Cat to Leave Your Xmas Tree Alone

I had to chuckle at this because it reminded me of the first time I met Theo.  I went over to meet him at his foster home having read his background story.  When I arrived his foster mom went to get him and she came back carrying him. There was a Christmas ornament hanging from a beam between the dining room and living room.  His foster mom tried to introduce me to Theo but he was more interested in batting the ornament even though it had to be five feet above him.  This didn't deter him.  His sole focus was the ornament and his paws continuing to missing it by a wide margin didn't seem to frustrate him at all.

I was impressed by his determination at the same time amused by his lack of spacial perspective.  It was then I decided to adopt Theo.  Those two traits still are a major part of his personality and I haven't regretted the decision once...

Household Health Update

I've been waiting for Thompson and Diego-san to take their turns with the dreaded sneezing attacks. So far so good- no signs in either one that they are going to follow in Theo's footsteps.  Me on the other hand haven't been so lucky.  I've got the worst cold I've had in many a year.  If my nose doesn't stop running soon I think I'll far surpass the world's record for number of tissues used.

Near Night Fight

Before Theo joined the household, Thompson and Diego-san used to wrestle on a regular basis.  Since Theo's arrival, both Thompson and Diego-san tend to wrestle Theo and not each other.  There still is an occasional rumble between Thompson and Diego-san and the other night I thought it was going to happen as Thompson went over to where Diego-san was peacefully seated to seemingly challenge him.  Once I shined a light on the boyz however, the fight mode seemed to dissipate.

Winter Watcher

Diego-san watched as the snow fell... and kept falling.  Fourteen inches later the world looked like a whole other place.  He also was sure to snoopervise my shoveling with a look that suggested only an idiot would go outside when he could be snug and warm inside.  His look was right.

Me Too

I think my extra attention for Theo the past few days has made Diego-san a bit jealous.  I've noticed he's been licking his behind a lot again which might mean it's time for another visit to the vet for an anal gland inspection.

Theo Update

Theo's still sneezing a lot although the attacks don't seem quite so severe.  I think all the sneezing has taken a lot out of him because last night he slept by my side the entire night which is very unusual.  Usually he'll get up after a while and tear around the house to let the rest of us know how boring we are especially when we're sleeping.

Poor Theo

Theo has had a rough couple of days. He's been having constant sneezing fits.  He's had similar issues in the past and unfortunately the ailment usually gets passed along to Thompson and Diego-san. Poor little guy, he wants to sit on my lap but when he starts sneezing I have to move him because hard as I try, I can't get him to cover his mouth when he sneezes.  I hope he gets well real soon...

It must have been an especially captivating episode of "Parks and Recreation" that grabbed two of the boyz' attention.

Word on the Street

Diego-san heard the word on the street is that some of his butt ailments from the past year get mentioned in the family holiday letter.  He's not too thrilled about that...

The fine folks at Celestial Kitties awarded the boyz this award. Of course with three boyz and seven items, there was disagreement about how to respond to the award.  As the impartial arbitrator of this blog I will respond on behalf of the boyz:

1) Thompson is the loner of the house.  Diego-san has to be in the same room as me 80 percent of the time. Theo has to be in the same room as me 90 percent of the time and if he's not in the same room with me he has to be in the same room as Thompson or Diego-san the other 10 percent of the time.  It's not unusual for Thompson to sleep in the living room by himself at night or not join the rest of us when we are downstairs watching TV.  I can't possibly be classified as a loner since I'm living with three cats... oh wait I guess that might be looked upon that way...

2) Diego-san is the most observant of the three boyz.  If I move something, anything in a room, the first thing he'll do when he enters that room is to check out the new location of the item.  It's uncanny how he immediately spots anything different in a room.

3) Theo has a natural pacifier- the tip of his tail.  I'll often sit Theo in my lap, tummy side up and bring the tip of his tail up to his nose.  He'll almost always start peacefully licking his tail like a lollipop and will mindlessly continue to do so until I take it away.

4) Thompson is the only one micro-chipped (not counting myself).  I think this seems a little ironic since he's likely the one who least needs it.  If he somehow got out of the house and brought to a location that could read the chip, it's likely I'd already be calling on the lookout for a missing three-legged cat.

5) Diego-san demonstrated the most strategic fighting move ever seen in the house.  He was in a stare-down with Thompson once and he swiftly swatted Thompson's lone front leg out from under him causing Thompson to tumble into a position of vulnerability ready for the oncoming pouncing.  I thought it was quite mean of Diego to do that, but I had to give him points for coming up with the manuever...

6) One thing Theo has learned from his brothers is how to speak his mind.  When he first joined the household he barely said a peep, and if he did speak, it was always in a little tiny peep.  More and more he has started to match Thompson in the frequency of his speaking, and Diego-san in the volume.

7) Diego-san has the deepest purr; Thompson the cutest snore; Theo is the best headbutter.

We'd love any of the kitties reading this to share seven things about them on their own blogs if they haven't already done so...

Thompson thinks the back of Theo's head smells like chicken.  Theo is trying to figure out a way to lick the back of his own head.

Theo's Advice

Often when trying to stay warm in a very cold house one will forget to make sure one's nose is snugly covered by a blanket. It something that is easy to forget.

After a weekend of watching football, some online shopping, and way too much bumming around, Thompson is ready for the normal routine to resume.  Of course he didn't protest any of the occassional turkey treats he was given over the weekend.

The Renaissance Cat

Because owls are wise it's good to try to look like them.  Because black bears are tough, it's also good to look like them.  Here is Diego-san's imitation of an owly black bear.

Occasional Snuggler

Thompson isn't one who likes to be picked up.  Most of the time if I do that he gives me a good growl and merely puts up with a little hug.  Given my absences around the house the past few weeks there have been a surprising number of times when he hops over and asks to be picked up.  How does he let me know that this is what he wants? He puts his front paw on my knee and digs the claws in.  I don't mind though because he's an awesome snuggler when he wants to be.

Some of us stress out about how quickly Monday seems to come after a too busy weekend.  Theo?  Not so much.

Ante Up

The boyz and I watched another segment of "Stupid Pet Tricks" on David Letterman's show.  My favorite were two dogs- one got in a a little plastic car, the other pushed the car from behind.  I told the boyz it's long past the time to learn a trick to get us all on national TV.  I don't think they were too receptive of the idea.

Day Two

More notes from over the weekend from the boyz's new sitter: "Three hungry boys again today. I petted and brushed each one just a little.  I got all three purring.  Diego-san is decieving.  He's skinnier than he looks.  I had to be gentle with the furminator so I didn't hurt his bones.  Thompson has been fine, allowing me to pet and brush him..."

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Day One

The boyz, being the literary experts they are, sometimes accuse me of being an unreliable narrator of their story.  For this past trip I hired a new sitter, and I thought I'd share her notes from her visits to provide another point of view.

"All three were happy to see me, mainly because they were hungry! They really voiced their opinions on that!  Food was eaten within minutes. Thompson settled in a kitty bed, in the kitty room.  The other two followed me up and down and watched as I did chores. All allowed me to pet them- even shy Thompson (he's sniffing my feet right now.)"

To be continued...

Back Home

Got back from a weekend in Chicago.  The boyz were on their own for three days and two nights.  Unlike my return from other trips they actually showed me that they all missed me some... I went downstairs during the evening to watch some football and nap and for one of the rare times all three napped on me.  Theo slept on my legs; Diego-san slept on my stomach; and Thompson got the primo place- right on my chest...

Mr. Bob

Went to see Bob Dylan play in downtown St. Paul Wednesday night.  Now I'm off to Chicago to see him there as well.  The boyz suspect I care more about Dylan than them.  Not true, just that Bob sings better than  the boyz (although granted some would disagree with that).
