More Worries

I'm officially worried about Thompson. He didn't eat much all day and didn't drink much either. Since he's sleeping in his favorite spots and spending time purring on my chest, I'd like to think it's all the stress of the past week but he's never skipped an entire day's worth of meals before.

I was glad to see that when I left the house for this week's curling match (we won), Diego was sitting on one sofa and Thompson was sitting across the living room on the other. When I got back home Diego was next to Thompson, giving up his usual pride to sit next to his best buddy. It'll be a very happy day here when all returns to our normal routines...

Equal Time

It's been a rough week for Theo and Thompson too... Theo does not like me being inaccessible so whenever there is a closed door between us, he lets his opinion be known by crying and scratching at the door. He's not quite been sure what to make of all the changes that have gone on this week.

At first, Thompson surprised me by going about his business as if nothing was happening. The only sign of his concern was he wasn't finishing up his meals- something that is very unusual for a boy who loves his food. Yesterday when he finally got a look at Diego-san he hissed and growled. I'm not sure if this was because: a) Diego smelled different after his day at the vet; b) With the clear cone around his neck, Diego-san looked like he had dropped down from outer space; c) Thompson was jealous of all the attention Diego has gotten at the expense of the other two boyz...

A Good Step

Diego-san got good news from the vet. The infection hasn't spread any. The vet wants him to come back every two days so she can clean the wounds. He seems much more comfortable today and apparently charmed everyone at the clinic where he spent all of the day.

Taking His Medicine

Diego-san seems to be feeling a little bit better. He slept snuggled by my side all last night. I felt a little sheepish leaving him by himself as I went to work again, but when I got home he had finished all the food I left out for him and he used the litterbox for number 1. His eyes look more clear and he seems to be a little bit more himself today. Hopefully we'll get a good report at the vet tomorrow.

Get Well Soon D

We had a pretty scary night here.

I had noticed over the weekend that Diego-san was definitely not himself and he was moving extremely gingerly. I figured it was going to take some time for him to get over the soreness from the procedure that was done last week.

Last night when I got home he went down to use the litter box and I thought I would watch to see if he was in any pain. He did his business fine- and then he tried to hop up on the washing machine. He missed and when I looked at the ground there was a ton of blood. He scampered up to the joist area by the ceiling. I tried to get him down but he knocked my glasses off and moved further away. By the time I got my glasses back on he was nowhere in sight- and he had access to just about any area between the sheet rock ceiling and the joist area of the basement. I had no idea how much he was still bleeding so I was extremely worried he was going to bleed to death before I could get to him. I called him and called him but not a peep. I thought I was going to have to start knocking holes in the sheet rock but even that might not have worked too well since it probably would have just scared him to move to another inaccessible area...

As a last resort I called my friend who house sits him when I'm gone. Diego's always been really fond of her and I thought he might respond to her voice. It took a while but it worked- he eventually let out a small meow so we were able to pinpoint his location. It's not easy seeing a black cat in the darkness... she was able to coax him out.

He's in pretty rough shape but resting OK right now. He had three abscesses and the doctor had to sedate him to cut them out. The wounds look dreadful and she said she might not have gotten all the dying skin off because the area was so big. So he has to go back to see the vet on Thursday. He's wearing a cone and he spent the entire night trying trying to get it off. he was so loopy from the sedative I was worried he was going to hurt himself so i stayed up all night trying to calm him down.

He ate a full meal and drank a ton of water this morning and even used the litter box. We just took a long nap together after i gave him his pain medication (it's a narcotic so it knocks him out pretty good although he was purring so loud and trying to rub his face against mine cone be damned that again I was a bit worried he was going to tear the wounds open more...)

Theo is absolutely freaking out about all this. I think a lot of it has to do with the change in his routine- moving a litter box water dish, and dinner dish, not letting him see diego, me sleeping in a different room with the door closed... He spent ALL last night outside the door crying. and did the same thing this morning.

Comedy Team

I was drinking some ginger tea and Theo was trying to climb up me to get a better sniff of what I was drinking. I said to him, "You like the smell of ginger little buddy?" and it occurred to me the line sounded like we were rehearsing an episode of Gilligans Island.

Oh the fun we have.

Eye Opener

I explained to Thompson the procedure I brought Diego-san in for last week. I don't think he could quite believe I'd do that to his buddy.

Learning from the Olympics

After watching some of the Olympic coverage Thompson and Theo have decided they want to tryout as a luge team next time around so they've been practicing their positions.

Good Brother

Theo's being a very good brother. I asked him not to pester Diego-san so much to give Diego time to heal a bit. And today, Theo did as asked and didn't try to chase Diego all over the house like he usually does. What a nice boy.

Update

Diego-san had to have his bum glands expressed. He dealt with the ordeal like a trooper. He was purring when I took him out of his carrier and the vet tech examined him. He was purring when the vet took him in back. I could hear him voice his displeasure at the actual procedure but when they brought him back, he was purring. He of course then showed us all by doing number two right on the examination table.

Not Himself

I'm a bit worried about Diego-san. I've noticed since I've been home that he's been repeatedly cleaning his 'bottom.' There appears to be some clear discharge down there so I'm going to call the vet tomorrow morning... He seems to be fine otherwise- eating well and still using the litter box...

3-legged dog wins 1st place in NYC shelter contest

(AP) NEW YORK — A three-legged pitbull mix that played in a game of doggie baseball has won "Best in Show" at a talent competition held by one of New York City's largest animal shelters.

Nine dogs competed in Friday's contest at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But it was Prince who impressed the judging panel the most with his feat of catching three baseballs.

The nearly 2-year-old dog lost one of his legs and had a pin inserted in another after being struck by a car.

The ASPCA's senior vice president of the adoption center says Prince's disability doesn't hold him back.

Gail Buchwald says he "struts his stuff like a winner."

Rationed

Thompson was REALLY vocal yesterday when I got home. He acted like he hadn't been fed for days. I suspect what might have happened is since the boyz's sitter only stopped by once a day, the boyz couldn't be fed three times a day like they are used to. Thompson, my ever obedient boy, listened to my parting words of wisdom advising to save some food for throughout the day. The problem with being the only one of three to listen is that the other two boyz probably waited for Thompson to walk away and then helped themselves to his portion.

Oh Oh

The suitcase came out and Diego-san had the look in his eyes that indicated he knew exactly what that means.

Meal time

Usually there's more of a stampede at meal times but the boyz seemed to be a bit camera shy... especially Thompson.

Thompson wasn't too enthralled by the Super Bowl or all the hype surrounding the Super Bowl.

Our Sandy

This was Thompson's reaction when I informed him that my favorite actress, Sandra Bullock, got nominated for an Oscar for best actress. I think my reaction may have been exactly the same.
