But then someone serves him dinner and it's just a vague memory.

I don't think there is any place he would rather be than where he is now!
I have the same feeling when seeing Chica sitting at the window staring out. Well, this is the world, we will never know what they'd prefer if they could choose as they please.
He does look like he misses those days, but I am sure he very much appreciates having a forever home with you even more!
Sometimes I think Thompson gets nostalgic about his early days in the wild when the world was a much bigger place.
